Hubballi, Karnataka – In a groundbreaking medical achievement, HCG Suchirayu Hospital Hubli successfully performed its first-ever liver transplant, marking a significant milestone for the hospital and the city of Hubballi. The surgery, carried out on a 50-year-old man suffering from advanced liver disease, is the first of its kind in the twin cities.
The patient, Ravi (name changed), had been battling end-stage liver disease due to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and was also managing diabetes and hypertension.
Despite over a year of treatment under the care of Dr. Sandeep Kumbar at HCG Suchirayu, his condition worsened, leaving a liver transplant as the only life-saving option.
Life-Saving Surgery
After four months on the transplant waiting list, Ravi was fortunate to receive a liver from a 28-year-old cadaver donor on August 15, following coordination with the Jeevansarthakathe organ transplant board.
The surgery, led by renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr. Basant Mahadevappa, commenced at 3:00 a.m. and lasted for 10 hours. The operation was completed without complications, and Ravi was discharged on September 9 after a month of post-operative care.

In addition to celebrating the transplant, Dr. Kumbar and his team used the opportunity to raise awareness about the risks of NAFLD, particularly for diabetic patients. He advised regular check-ups and early interventions to manage liver health before it reaches a critical stage.
